Early Season

Subtropical storm Andrea is warming up off the east coast and sending some good surf to south FLA and some blown out mess to the Carolina’s…unless you know where to go to avoid the VAS conditions. Unfortunately, I have been working way too much to get any of this swell.  I hope some of you are getting it.

The forecast calls for weakening due to Andrea moving into cooler waters and a bit of wind shear.  Some history to note is that the last time a storm was named so early was on April 18,2003. That was Tropical Storm Ana which formed near Bermuda. An unamed storm formed on April 21,1992.

There is really nothing more to note about this storm. All I can say is be careful out there and I hope no one experiences any flooding. She’ll be gone in a few days. The turn out to sea has started. However,  A TROPICAL STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM ALTAMAHA SOUND GEORGIA SOUTH TO FLAGLER BEACH FLORIDA.

Southern North Carolina Wahine Gathering

Well it looks like the east coast is finally getting some waves. If you can find a spot that blocks the wind, go surfing! I wanted to let all the southern NC gals know that a get together on Figure 8 Island is in the works- on Saturday June 9th come on over to Figure 8 Island and surf in front of Paula Bushardt’s beach house. Make sure you R.S.V.P. on the wahine forum as Figure 8 is a private island and your name needs to be on the list to get on the island. Think about carpooling too! Bring your surfboard, beach towel, cooler, and hang out with some old friends or make new ones.

notes from the StAND

Hi everyone,

my name is Kristen and I will be writing a bit about the Northern Outer Banks, mostly Kill Devil Hills. I am from New Bern, NC and currently go to school in Boone at App. State working toward a BS in Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology.

I have surfed for a little over 10 years, mostly surfing in the Altantic Beach area. I am forever gratfeul for my parents driving me 45 min. to the beach every weekend. My mom honestly did not think I would stick with surfing, but supported me anyhow. I am not a contest surfer, though I did a few in the Nags Head/Kill Devil Hills area with decent results this past fall. My boss and friend pushed me into my first contest by signing me up without my knowledge, I do not think I would have ever done it had not been for them.

A few years ago I had an opportunity to be an Ocean Lifeguard for the Town of Kill Devil Hills. Since I spend 80% of my time awake on the beach, I think I can share with you info on some of the events going on in the Outer Banks as well as what spots are firing, what spots are dead and how the water temp is, and hopefully post photos.

Jersey Girl

Hey wahines, my name is Kelly and I’ll be reporting from the Jersey Shore..I guess since this is my first post I should tell you a bit about myself. I switched from standing on a bodyboard to a surfboard when I was 13, and got hooked right away. I started competing probably a month after I started to surf, but most contests here don’t get more than 10 girls if we’re lucky. I’m also a member of my high school surf team. I love my homebreak, Belmar, and my baby sharp eye. I’ll be giving plenty of contest news from our local ESA, as well as Northeast Regionals in May. Besides surfing I love looking at and making art, running, lacrosse (currently taking up wayyy too much surf time) and writing

We just had a big noreaster which coincided with the highest tide of the year. Last Sunday we saw ridiculous unrideable conditions, slop chop but sizeable. On Monday it cleaned up beautifully with a nice west wind, plenty of people out (still in hoods/boots/gloves of course) scoring nice waist to chest barrels, except for me…. thanks to lacrosse.

I’ll write more soon!

Spring Break in Cabo

The recent swell in southern California has been called some of the best the west coast has seen in years. Surfline.com’s coverage uses words like epic, all time, and going off. (Check out their photo essays for the proof). While all that was happening, I was about 1000 miles south in the town of San Jose Del Cabo watching the Sea of Cortez wallop the shore.caboshorebreak1.jpg Sitting alongside me were Shannon Sommers and Jennifer Hamrock from Hatteras- both schoolteachers on spring break. I was lucky enough to join them- leaving my almost two-year-old daughter at home with grandma and dad for the first time. A few weeks before leaving I was wondering if we would even go surfing, I had heard Cabo was a summer wave and we’d be too early for the south swells. I honestly didn’t mind. I just wanted to go somewhere warm with friends- sip cocktails by the pool, go shopping, and just have some me time. When I arrived Shannon showed me the surf forecast and I was worried we wouldn’t get to surf at all if it didn’t get any smaller soon!

Shannon and Jenn joked yet were perfectly serious about the fact that every time they go on a trip the waves are huge. We are all experienced surfers and have traveled to Hawaii, Central America, mainland Mexico, Puerto Rico and such, but our full-time jobs, weekend warrior status and a cold water winter has made us soft and weak. One day, we actually rented a car to drive away from the biggest waves with hopes of finding something more accomadating. We stopped at Shipwrecks on the east cape on our way to Nine Palms and it was firing. cabolines.jpgThe whole coastline was lined up like photos in a magazine- I was in the midst of someone’s dream surf trip, and my out of shape ass couldn’t handle it! On any other day Nine Palms was probably a super mellow right pointbreak perfect for log riding. The day we drove onto the sand, it was a 30 minute paddle to the outside with six wave sets in the eight to 12-foot range and an occasional larger cleanup set. cabosurfing.jpgI watched one determined gal try to paddle out three times, saw some too tan sponsored high school girls get out fairly easy, saw a bomb set that sent everyone scrambling into frothy whitewater, saw another person paddling out with a helmet, and that was enough for me to stay put on the beach and work on my tan.

The waves did eventually get a bit smaller and we surfed close to our resort at break called Zippers and another wave called Old Mans. Zippers is a lot of fun- a fast beach-break, which incidentally the local bodyboarders love. Old Mans is more of a longboard wave- meaning the waves are fat and easier to catch on a bigger board, though the swell was big enough I rode it on my 6′ Okazaki and got some decent rides.

The cool thing about San Jose Del Cabo is you don’t need to bricabotequilabar.jpgng a surfboard. Costa Azul surf shop is right across from Zippers and they rent boards (they have a wide range of styles) for cheap and will even give you a ride to a different break. Shannon and Jenn saved at least $100 in airline surcharges. (I was extremely lucky and wasn’t charged either way for my board!) Downtown San Jose has some nice restaurants and good shopping. Shannon is fluent in Spanish and was able to barter all her purchases to a much lower price. We didn’t need a car, a taxi ride is $5 to go anywhere. And taxi’s are a good option when you are visiting tequila shops where you can taste test before you buy!

The main town on Cabo San Lucas is about 20 minutes away and we did go there one night for the whole tourist experience. It’s a party town and they have adopted the slogan Las Vegas uses- “what happens in Cabo, stays in Cabo.” Over and over we heard working locals say- “you are on vacation, drink lots, nobody knows you are here, get wild, etc” So they promote irresponsibility and we saw plenty of it!  The resort where we stayed was very family oriented, so I guess Cabo and the surrounding area appeals to all types. But let me tell you when that happy hour bell rings and you just surfed all day and are relaxing under a palm tree, an ice cold pina colada is just about the perfect way to welcome the sunset.

Aloha!!

sheenabeancrop.jpgAloha! My name is Sheena and I’m writing this blog from the island of Oahu in beautiful Hawaii. I guess I should make this a little introduction so everyone reading this can get to know me. I am originally from northeast North Carolina (near the Outer Banks) and went to college at UNC Wilmington. I got married after my sophomore year and then moved out here to Hawaii with my husband, Austin, who is in the Coast Guard. We have been out here for about two years now and we love it.

I started surfing when I was 14-years-old in the Outer Banks, but didn’t really paddle out regularly until I was 16. I definitely had a hard time learning both because I lived about 45 minutes from the ocean, and because I am the only person in my family (and of my friends at the time) who surfed. Once I moved to Wilmington when I was 17, I became a member of the UNCW surf club and started spending alot more time in the water. I have surfed in three ECWC contests, although I probably did a better job of making my competition look good than ever looking good myself!

Coming out to Hawaii has definitely helped my surfing by making me more confident in bigger waves. We logged over 220 days in the water during our first year here. One of the coolest things about living here is the huge variety of waves available. From the little peelers of Waikiki to the mountain known as Waimea, there is a great wave for every style of surfing. My favorite breaks on the island are Makaha because of it’s loooooong walls and a little spot called Rest Camp that’s like Waikiki without the crowds. Both these spots are on the west side of Oahu.

Overall, living in Hawaii is everything I had imagined and more. It definitely has a darker side whick I will get into later, but it is a paradise by every meaning of the word. I havent spent as much time in the water during the last six months as I would like to, because I was pregnant and now I have a beautiful two month old baby boy, but this is my kick in the butt to get back out in the water more and relay all I’m seeing and doing to all of you.

If there is anything specific any of you would like to know about Hawaii or about me, feel free to ask away! Until next time, aloha and mahalo (thankyou) for reading my blog!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSOCIATION OF SURFING PROFESSIONALS (ASP) INTERNATIONAL

GILMORE RINGS THE BELL AND MOVES TO EQUAL FIRST ON ASP RATINGS

gilmorercpbells07.jpg

BELLS BEACH, Australia (Friday, Apr. 6, 2007) – ASP Women’s World Tour Rookie Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) is on top of the world after winning the Rip Curl Women’s Pro and her first victory as an elite tour surfer at Bells Beach today.

Gilmore’s trouncing of defending Rip Curl Pro and 2004 World Champion Sofia Mulanovich (PER) in the Final has catapulted her to equal World No. 1 for the first time in her career. She shares the rating with 2005 World Champion Chelsea Hedges (AUS).

“I’m just over the moon, this is unbelievable, Gilmore said. “To compete against Sofia, a defending champ, in the final and manage to win means I’m back on track. To be World No. 1 next to Chels is amazing and exactly where I want to be.

gilmoresrcp07.jpgGilmore, who won two ASP Women’s World Tour events as a wildcard before qualifying for the 2007 elite tour, has been vocal about her aspirations to earn a world title her first year on tour. She was disappointed to start that campaign with an equal 5th finish after being eliminated by Hedges in the Quarterfinals on the Gold Coast of Australia last month. Her Quarterfinal win over Hedges today puts the surfers at two wins apiece in elite tour competition.

“I was feeling pretty confident that once I had knocked off Chelsea I thought I could probably take it to the top, Gilmore said. “She’s in great form, as are all the girls, but Chelsea was the biggest hurdle and I knew that if I could get over that then I could take this through to the final.

Five Girls Score Mexico

My friend Patti Hook, who lives and surfs the Outer Banks of North Carolina sent me some photos of her recent trip to mainland Mexico. LeanneFosterShe went down there with four other OBX surf gals- Leanne Foster, Kim Franks, Ashley Barnes, and Jessica Delosreyes. Needless to say they scored, and I was drooling over the photos, so thought I’d share. I asked her for some more details about their trip and this is what she had to say….

“There were people at Nexpa from all over but it wasn’t crowdednexpagirls07.jpg considering the quality wave. Guys from Israel, Aussies, Brits, couples that drove from the Northeast, etc. We stayed in Troncones but it was small and we checked the swell maps and decided that the swell was going to hit in Nexpa and got up there in the afternoon while the swell was building but windy. The next morning it was firing and we got about seven hours of surfing in before the wind came up around 3 or 4pm. We had a oceanfront wood cabina for cheap and laid around in hammocks and had a fire pit out front. It was real mellow and I was totally relaxed when it was time to go home.

nexpabarrel.jpgThe swell lasted three days and then we headed back to Troncones for one last night where we had to carry a certain short person (actually drag) back to the house after we left dinner/drinks! We flew out of Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa. No one bothered us and I felt very safe the whole time unlike other places. I was real surprised how mellow it was for five girls to be driving in Mexico with no problems even with Federale check points.”

Nexpa anyone?

Dog/Cat Food Rant

Well it’s time to speak out about the dog and cat food situation. Many of you know that Leigh and I have 2 dogs,4 cats,2 red eared slider turtles, and several goldfish. Luckily the fish and turtles aren’t affected by the bad food. We spend a little more money to feed our cats and dogs a high quality dry food,Nutro and sometimes Solid Gold. Nutro has been awesome, one of the cats suffered from a food allergy which caused hair loss and after being on the food for several months, her hair came back. The food works. I am really pissed off to know that the company we have trusted, has been purchasing indegredients from China, which doesn’t have the same laws as the United States. Now why in the hell would the company do this, knowing that China doesn’t have the same regulations? That is what angers me more than anything. We switched foods and now come to find out, that company buys wheat gluten from China too and has a voluntary recall of some of it’s products. Yesterday Quest,my big, old, stubborn Border Collie threw up and didn’t eat,nor did she eat today. She got into something nasty outside night before last and has been on antibiotics so I’m hoping that’s all it was. She hasn’t been herself today so just to be safe,I’m calling the vet tomorrow, now that I’ve seen the latest recall. Our younger, smaller dog Blue seems okay so far so I’m hoping Quest’s stomach is just upset.  In the mean time,I’ll be making dog food and I won’t be using anything from CHINA!

Fantasy Surfer

I just love watching the webcasts of the WCT events and even some of the WQS events. But what makes them more exciting is when there’s a boat trip on the line or really cool swag. That’s where Fantasy Surfer comes in. I play both men and women’s. I’ve been playing men’s FS for 3 or 4 years now and women’s just started last year. The best part is that it’s free to play! I belong to several clubhouses on both sites. Only one or two of them are active though. The guys who belong to the houses are cool and many of us chat about the surfers, surfing, books, and whatever else we want to talk about. A few of us do quite a bit of research on the surfers and the breaks before each contest. Over the years I have taken the knowledge and managed to get better at picking my teams. Last season I even won some nice luggage from Billabong for getting the highest score at one of the women’s contests. I think I’m going to do it again at this next one, The Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach which leads me to my next blog…
