East Coast Wahines offer Bonds for Education

Wrightsville Beach Beach, NC— The 12th Annual East Coast Wahine Championships will award four $500 savings bonds for higher education.  Any competitor in elementary, middle, or high school, is eligible to win. Questionnaires to qualify for the bonds will be handed out to competitors during the event held on August 16-17th in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Recipients will be notified by September 30th, 2008.

“We are very excited about offering bonds for higher education,” says event director Anne Beasley Weber. “We could not have offered this type of award without the help of the Julie Ann Foundation. While the Foundations’ goal is to provide quality education and care for Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients, their founder is a long-time surfer.”

The ECWC was the first female amateur surfing contest on the east coast. Approximately 150 wahines will travel to southeastern North Carolina to compete in Shortboard, Longboard, Bodyboard, and Novice. There will also be an Open Shortboard division for all ages with a $1300 prize purse is up for grabs.

The ECWC’s presenting sponsor is Billabong Girls. Billabong produces active lifestyle, fashion-forward clothing, accessories and related products designed and distributed to a worldwide customer base. Billabong sponsors the world’s best female surfers, snowboarders and skateboarders, and is committed to supporting the progression of women’s surfing, and aspiring female surfers.

EAST COAST WAHINE CHAMPIONSHIP: A WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH SUMMER TRADITION

Wahine: Pronounced wä-?h?-n?: Hawaiian word for ‘woman’; also refers to a female surfer.

Visitors are in for an exciting weekend at Wrightsville Beach on August 16 and 17 during the 12th Annual Billabong East Coast Wahine Championship. All eyes will be on the surf action just south of Crystal Pier (near the Oceanic Restaurant) when the East Coast’s largest women’s surfing competition takes to the waves. The competition begins at 8:00 AM and lasts until 5:00 PM on Saturday and from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Sunday.

In 1997, the East Coast Wahine Championship was the first all-female surfing contest on the East Coast. Approximately 150 women of all ages and abilities will ride the waves during surf competitions in Shortboard, Longboard, Bodyboard, and Novice divisions. This year there’s a new division: an Open Shortboard category for all ages. There’s also a Guppy division (parental assistance allowed) for the 10 and under surfers and bodyboarders. Entry forms can be accessed online via www.eastcoastwahines.com. For more details email anne@eastcoastwahines.com.

For wahines and others who don’t surf but would like to learn, Indo Jax (a new local surf school), will set up at the tournament site offering advice and surf tips to Novice and Guppy competitors, and offering lessons to anyone interested. The following Saturday, on August 23, Billabong pro-surfer Keenan Lineback will lead “Billabong Girls Beach Break ’08,” an all-girl surf camp series making a stop in Wrightsville Beach.

North Carolina’s Cape Fear Coast beaches (Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Wrightsville Beach) are renowned as great places to learn to surf. According to Outside magazine (May 2006), Wrightsville Beach is among the “Best North American Beginner Surf Spots. According to Outside, “Wrightsville’s soft, sandy beaches are the perfect venue for beginners and perfectly warm in the summer.” And earlier this year, Surfer magazine named UNC-Wilmington as one of the East Coast’s top surf schools (the campus is located just minutes from Cape Fear Coast beaches). Visitors can learn to surf by signing up for lessons and camps offered by local eco-friendly surfing schools. Surf Camp, Inc., Crystal South Surfing Camp, Carolina Surf Adventures, and Indo Jax Surf School are among the local surf schools that offer programs for children, adults, families, and corporate retreats. The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher and Wrightsville Beach Parks & Recreation also offer summer surf programs.

12th Annual East Coast Wahine Championships

Wrightsville Beach Beach, NC-Southeastern North Carolina is gearing up for the largest women’s surfing contest on the right coast- the East Coast Wahine Championships. Held every August in Wrightsville Beach, the ECWC encourages female surfers of all ages and abilities to join in the fun. Nearly 200 wahines will travel from Maine to Puerto Rico bringing friends and family for two days of camaraderie and competition.

This year, the ECWC will host Open Shortboard, a division for surfers to test their skills in an all ages category. Other age-based divisions include shortboard, longboard, bodyboard, novice for first time competitors, and a 10 and under division where parents may assist their children in the water. Entry forms for the 12th annual ECWC are available on-line, http://eastcoastwahines.com

The East Coast Wahine Championships was the first all female amateur surfing contest on the east coast. The event began in 1997 as a tribute to a late friend and as a way to give women the spotlight in the surf, rather than being pushed to the end of a contest or sent out in the worst conditions of the day. The event has since grown steadily receiving national coverage and industry sponsors.

The ECWC is proud to announce Billabong as its presenting sponsor. Billabong produces active lifestyle, fashion-forward clothing, accessories and related products designed and distributed to a worldwide customer base. The products are developed in the authentic environment of the surf culture and sold primarily through surf and specialty retail boutiques. Billabong sponsors the world’s best female surfers, snowboarders and skateboarders, and is committed to supporting the progression of women’s surfing, and aspiring female surfers.
