Welcome Wahines!

Anne

Welcome to our fresh new community! My name is Anne and I started this website back in 1998 as a way for surfer girls to connect- this site is also home to the East Coast Wahine Championships, an all female surf contest that happens every August in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. The new site is long overdue and I’m so stoked with the look and feel, I hope you will bookmark us and check in often. I’ve recruited a few contributors who will be posting stories, photos, surf reports, and blogs about what’s going on in their surfing community. The two posts below this one introduce Rachel- writing to us from New York, and Ocean- writing to us from North Carolina. If you are interested in becoming a contributor just drop me an email.

We just put the forum up- while it has a different look, your same user name and password should work. If you haven’t joined you can do that now by clicking Register (at the top right of this page). We hope to get your avatars working soon. Keep an eye on the photos page (it’s a work in progress), there will be images from the last eight East Coast Wahine Championships! We will be adding more too- from reader submitted photos to photos that have appeared on our old site over time. We still have lots of work to do, but I wanted to get the new site up and running like I promised. I hope you like and let us know what you think! We value all feedback and suggestions.

North East Notes

Hey everyone! I’m Rachel and I will be writing to you from the cold waters of Long Beach, New York. I am so excited to be joining in on the new site! I will be keeping you up to date on the waves, the weather and the travels of a cold water wahine!

I grew up in Florida near Satellite Beach and moved to New York in December of 2004 to continue my education in social work. I did not start surfing in Florida until about 4 years ago and have been hooked ever since.  I have not done any contests yet but I surf whenever possible, rain (snow) or shine.  I am currently sponsored by Girls4Sport and locally by Etnies Girl.

A lot of people wonder why you would move from Florida to New York.   Believe it or not, but the waves here in Long Beach can get a lot better than the drifty chop that Florida typically gets. BUT, when I’m out there with an ice cream headache after my first duck dive and there is ice whipping me in the face as I paddle against the drift, I often long for the warm waters of Florida.  That being said, I do a lot of travelling (thank you student loans!) to warmer places (Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, California) and will being going to El Salvador over the April break.

I am looking forward to hearing from everyone and keeping in touch with the East Coast Wahines surfing community! Peace and good waves! ~ Rachel

Introductions

Hi and welcome to Ocean’s Place, where the surf is always up even when it’s down. I’m stoked about the new site and I hope you are too. I’ll be loading you up with loads of Fantasy Surfer information, weather, surf forecasting, pro news, maybe some local stuff, along with some surf stories. Currently I reside in Wilmywood,NC, which makes for a good home base. It’s also the place where I got hooked up with the East Coast Wahines and competed in my first surf contest. I’ve been involved in the East Coast Wahine Championships ever since. Now I play medic at all the contests. I knew my EMT training would be good for something!

I’ve been bodyboarding for about 16 years now and I even have my own little surf camp called Carolina Surf Adventures where I teach people how to surf, along with educating them on the importance of taking care of our environment. Yep, I’m a conservationist and whenever I head out to catch some waves, I pick up trash on my way to the water. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand looking at the trash on the beach when I’m in the water. Expect some articles from me about taking care of Morther Earth and what you can do to help. For now I just wanted to post a quick introduction. Besides, Anne was going to kick my ass if I didn’t do this right away. lol

Stay tuned for a story about me being a winner of Red Bull’s Project Swell in 2005. I’ll also post my Fantasy Surfer picks for the Bells Contest and why I chose those particular surfers.

HEDGES HOLDS OFF TEEN PHENOM TO WIN ROXY PRO AND TAKE RATINGS LEAD

Chesea Hedges and her hubby Jason

COOLANGATTA, Australia (Monday, Mar. 5, 2007) – Chelsea Hedges, 23, has won the first event on the 2007 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Samsung, at what amounts to her home break of Snapper Rocks in Coolangatta, Australia today.

Hedges (formerly Georgeson) moved to Coolangatta from Avoca Beach in Sydney two years ago and has moved to ASP World No. 1 with her win today.

The 2005 ASP Women’s World Champion defeated prodigious Roxy Pro Wildcard Carissa Moore (HAW), 14, the youngest finalist in ASP elite-tour history, in three foot (one metre) waves this afternoon.

“It’s a pretty amazing feeling,” Hedges said. “I really wanted to win here because I’ve never won at Snapper before and my family was on the beach too so I’m pretty amped. After watching Carissa surf earlier, I was waiting for her to grab a bomb (set wave) and score a 9.0 or something but luckily for me she didn’t.”

Hedges has moved to World No. 1 with the win.

Christa Alves Profile

Christa Alves Profile
By Anne Beasley Weber, published in Surfing Magazine Easterns Program, 2006

Florida boasts some incredible female surfers–Mimi Munro, Frieda Zamba, Lisa Andersen, and Falina Spires come to mind. The next generation of up and coming pros are girls like Karina Petroni and Connie Arias. It’s time to add another name to the list. Christa Alves of Cocoa Beach has been doing nothing but winning. In four short years of competition, she’s put more first place trophies on her shelf than most career competitors. At 17, Christa has quickly jumped rank from budding amateur to promising pro. Unlike most of the names listed above Christa isn’t a lifelong surfer, she found her ocean muse six years ago.

Wahine Defined

The Definition of a Wahine
By: Hilary Walker

Wahine, Betty, Diva, Honey. There are many endearing terms used to describe a surfer girl. In the past, female surfers were criticized for participating in a sport that was once considered “masculine”. Today, women’s surfing has risen from the doldrums, stamping an everlasting imprint on the sport. With blonde bombshells like Lisa Andersen and Layne Beachley shattering previous standards, female surfing has taken a radical direction while still remaining “feminine.” Across the country, girls are trading in their mall dates and mini-skirts for a pair of baggies and a surf session.
