My Fall Freakout!!!

A few weeks ago I was on my way to my school’s football game (App State), the air was cool and crisp, bright, sunny skies, a really pretty fall day, but I had a real pang in my gut, it took less than a minute for me to realize why — I realized it was my first fall away from the coast since I started surfing at the age of 12. Maybe I felt slightly robbed of my summer due to lackluster swell in town and long working hours (I love my job, but as with most jobs, it is a job). At that moment, I decided that the next week I would make the 6 hour drive to the Outer Banks.

The mountains are really pretty in the fall, but I am so consumed with school, I was having little fun, so I got out. This particular weekend there are plenty of events going on — the Volcom LTKRF Cooterfish contest, Hurley was holding a surf contest,  ASG is playing at my favorite night spot, and the 40th annual Easterns started Sunday.

Thursday my classes were finished by 10:30 a.m., so I figured I would use one of my absences in my Friday class and head down early. I stopped off in Raleigh to pick up my friend and go to Whole Foods. I had a blast in that store! It was my first visit and I could have spent all my money there. I made it to my friend’s house near Nags Head Pier by 6:30, was bodysurfing by 6:40 then hit up Lucky 12’s across the street for a late dinner.

Friday morning I woke up pretty early in the morning to try to track down a board to ride for the weekend and found a 5′6 NSP Fish at the lifeguard station (my boss finds the coolest stuff on the beach) and went down to the pier where there was a decent knee-waist wave breaking. I went out a few hours, kind of frustrated because my sea legs were a bit dried out and the NSP is really heavy. I was also tired of the sea lice feasting on my bare skin.

All of my friends were working Saturday so I had two options surf or laze around town. The Volcom contest was postponed so after grabbing a West 3rd from Front Porch, I met up with a local friend and we headed down to the Pier to check the waves. Swell was running ok, but I guess not surfing for a while makes anything look ok. Probably knee-waist, breaking pretty shallow, I had a feeling the waves would get better as the tide filled in. After surfing the fish most the day I finally became comfortable with it and had a lot of fun. Not too many people in the water due to the weekend’s activities. As predicted the swell increased a bit throughout the day with the increasing tide and the winds stayed pretty light until 3pm or so- by then I realized I had been in the water since 10 and i should probably get a bite to eat. I ran across the street to Lucky 12’s had a awesome portobello sandwich and fries. I watched folks surf for a bit and decided I should go back out (after all I only had a few days) I stayed out until my friends got off work and surfed with them for another hour. Went out that evening to see ASG play, unfortunately the acoustics in the Brewing Station hurt the performance, but the boys rocked out as always!

Sunday morning surf check was bleak, so it was time to say goodbye head back west to catch up on school refreshed with a surf stoke I did not have all summer!

California Wildfires

The Santa Ana winds are usually welcomed by California surfers as they bring offshore winds to the coast and warmer air temperatures- matched up with the mix of swells hitting rolling in right now, it’s making for some pretty nice surf conditions. There are a bunch of folks scoring waves, while thousands of others are fleeing their homes in Los Angeles and San Diego counties due to the massive wildfires that are only being fueled by those Santa Ana winds.  East Coast Wahine Championships founder, Tammy Zybura, who lives in Del Mar, California sent me an email this morning letting everyone know she and her husband Matt are doing fine…for now, but were told to stay home from work and off the highways. Let’s hope these fires get contained soon. The air pollution from the smoke is downright awful. Check out this photo Tammy sent of surf and smoke in Del Mar.

Triple Crown Season is Coming

WOMEN’S PRO SURFING FACES BRIGHT NEW LEADERSHIP AT VANS TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFING

Honolulu - (October 17, 2007) - When the women’s ASP professional surfing tour touches down in Hawaii this November for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Series, it will be for the final stage of the battle of pro surfing’s leadership. For much of the past decade, Australian Layne Beachley, 35, has ruled supreme, securing seven world titles (1998-2003, 2006), two Vans Triple Crown Series titles (1997, 1998), and five Roxy Pro titles (1996, ‘97, ‘99, 2000, ‘04). Her penchant for Hawaii’s big waves has provided more than a few brilliant conclusions to the tour. But this year, Beachley’s reign has been battered by a crew of rapidly rising young rippers who aren’t afraid to take on a seasoned pro or solid surf.

Midway through the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) schedule at this time, Beachley is sitting at equal sixth on the on the WCT Top 17 rankings. Leading the field is 19-year-old ASP rookie Stephanie Gilmore (Australia - 4,308 ratings points), followed by Brazilian Silvana Lima (4,226 points). These two women share just three years of WCT experience betewen them. Former world champion Sofia Mulanovich (Peru - 3,811 points) is in third, and Samantha Cornish (Australia - 3,504 points) is fourth. Beachley has 2,882 points.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing for women will feature a critical 6-star World Qualifying Series (WQS) event: the Reef Hawaiian Pro, as well as the final two elite World Championship Tour (WCT) events of the year: the Roxy Pro, and the Billabong Pro Maui. Gilmore Back On Top After NAB Beachley Classic Win

CURL CURL, Sydney (Sunday, Oct. 14 2007)- ASP World Tour rookie Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) proved unstoppable at Sydney’s Curl Curl beach this morning, successfully defending her NAB Beachley Classic crown to reclaim the World No. 1 spot.

The 19-year-old who won this event as a wildcard in 2006, defeated Brazilian sensation Silvana Lima (BRA) in the toughest Final seen on the ASP Women’s World Tour this year.

Competing in excellent 1-metre surf, Gilmore and Lima went wave for wave in their first ever match- up, producing performances that have taken women’s professional surfing to new heights.

Gilmore edged out her South American foe with an overall score off 15.43 to Lima’s 15.33 (both out of a possible 20.00 points), earning US$ 20 000, the richest prizemoney purse on the ASP Women’s World Tour.

“I can’t believe it!â€? Gilmore exclaimed after the Final. “That was one of the hardest heats of my life. It was back and forth the whole time and Silvana was getting waves that I didn’t want and turning them into 7’s and 8’s. It was scary! To beat her is just incredible!â€? Broom Sticks and Surf Sticks

Cocoa Beach, Florida

Surfet’s 3rd Annual Halloween Wahine Pro/Am Surf Contest “ghostedâ€? by Coconuts on the Beach is creeping up. Surfer ghouls and goblins will come together in Cocoa Beach, where minutemen meets the beach, the weekend before Halloween, Oct. 27th and 28th, for a fun celebration that helps benefit The World Skin Cancer foundation. Cocoa Beach’s, 8 x World Champion Kelly Slater, highlighted the 2ND Annual Event by participating in the Tandem Division for charity. Over the past two years, this event has attracted many talented female surfers and their families.

New to this year’s line-up are the Pro Divisions for Women with a pretty $weet purse. Even though this competition highlights the girl surfers, there are plenty of fun divisions for the whole family including Tandem, Best Costume and a ¼ mile Paddle Battle. Former East Coast Champion, Todd Holland, and ESA Champion Lauren McLean will be hanging with the little ghouls and goblins for a grom session.

There are plenty of Halloween surprises thanks to this year’s awesome sponsors: Coconuts on the Beach, Spy Optics, WRV, Few New Zealand, Viking Surfboards, Marchiquita Swim wear, Dr. Surfer Dude’s Surf School, and Beach Classic Vespa!

Congrats to the new ESA Easterns Champions

The 40th Annual Eastern Surfing Championships took place Sept. 23-30th on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This is one of the largest surfing events on the east coast drawing the top talent from Maine to Florida. Surfers must qualify through local ESA events and then regionals to earn a slot in Easterns. All the competitors who made the trek to the Outer Banks deserve a round of applause, but the bragging rights go to the winners listed below. Congrats!
