We wrapped Hawaiian ti leaves with shells and stones and asked the Queen of Makaha to bring us waves. A circle of women, from Florida, the Carolinas, and Pennsylvania in a sunset ceremony. And we were blessed. Aloha spirit spread quickly amongst East Coast surfer girls. We made new friends, saw old ones. We surfed. We laughed, we cried. We turned pink and then red in the sun. Our parched lips begged for more water. We celebrated womanhood, sharing our souls on incoming waves and changing tides. I hope everyone who was there agrees that it was a truly special experience. Thanks to everyone who made the 1998 Wahine Championships happen. This website is dedicated to all East Coast surfer girls. A place we can share our stories and our lives.
