Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach

bells-beach-031008.jpg

The waiting period for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach begins March 18th, which for those of us in the United States is tomorrow so get your picks in now. There is swell on the way so the contest will probably start tomorrow. The waiting period ends March 29th.
Melanie Bartels has withdrawn from this event so Claire Bevilacqua is available for your teams again. Mel Redman Carr makes returns to the WCT by way of Bells after the birth of her daughter. I’m steering clear of her for this event because I want to see if she’s in full on contest mode. My surf dogs team consists of Woods, Sam, Steph.,Amee, and Bevo. I’m skeptical of Bevo because she can be so aggro out there and is notorious for drawing interference calls. If I find out in time who the trials winner is, I may pick her if she’s a good one. I wish I had a way of squeezing Jessi on my team, I think she’ll do well. Layne will do well if her mindset is on winning. Sofia is another good pick. She’ll kill it if nerves don’t get the best of her. She had a great start with her win at Snapper. Let’s see is she can carry the momentum into Bells. Steph. will be looking for a win after getting taken down by the little grom last year at Bells. J.Silva is my dark horse pick for some decent points. She had a good result there last year.
As for who to stay away from: Karina and Nicola for now due to them being low key rookies and seeming to have a hard time with the competitiveness of the WCT.

As for the men’s, picking a team is a bit more difficult. There are 45 of them versus 17 women, plus the trials winners.
My surf dogs team is made up of Slates, Parko, Reyes, Kai, Ace, Luke M., Jordy, and Bottle.
I may trade Luke before all is said and done. I dumped Tommy Whitaker for Ace because Whits is so inconsistent, however,he will probably do well at Bells. LOL! The Fantasy Surfer site’s hot picks are Parko, Jordy, Mick F., Whit(if it’s big), Ben Dunn, Reyes, Neves, and Taylor Knox. Other guys to think about are Wills, Taj, Slater, AI, and Pancho.
Fantasy Surfer’s ‘Groundswell’ says to stay away from Neco, Mick Campbell, Tiago,Picon, BI,The Goods, Rodrigo, Travis, Jihad, Royden, Fred, Wardo, and Benny B. I agree with him!
Wardo has all those felony charges pending so I can’t imagine his head would be in the contest, not that it typically is. Freddy P. is just not surfing well, seems preoccupied, and the rest of them just lack the skills, or just don’t do well at Bells.
Good luck everyone!

Fantasy Surfer 2008

super_bank1194qpgc07tostee_l.jpg

It’s that time again! Trading has opened for both the men’s and women’s Fantasy Surfer. The grand prize is another boat trip for 2 and prizes will be given for the high score of each event so pick your team’s now! It’s fun and it’s free. Pick your 8 guys with your 50 million dollar salary cap and your 5 women with your 30 million dollar salary cap.
The first event is the Quicksilver Pro Gold Coast which is held at Snapper Rocks, a high performance right point break. The waiting period begins February 23 and ends March 5 and from what I’ve read Snapper was getting good again. However, with the recent storms, it seems the bank may have been washed away again so the contest may not be held at Snapper after all. I guess the Quick crew will have to do some scouting at other nearby breaks.Mick Fanning will be on hand to defend his title. Look for Joel Parkinson, Dean Morrison, and Bede Durbidge to give him a run for his money. The tour is going to be a little strange with several of the old guard having retired last season and a few of them failed to requalify so now they are back on the WQS Grovelfest. It will be interesting to see what the new young guns do. Will Jordy Smith wow us with his futuristic moves? Will Dane decide he really wants to compete and be patient enough to make two full turns for the points and then bust out some crazy moves? And then there’s Benny B. back on the tour. I’m anxious to see what he does. As usual, I’m pulling for my man Kelly Slater to grab number 9!
I’ll post my picks later, I’m still doing some research. Now let’s talk a bit about the women at Snapper. My number one pick this year is Stephanie Gilmore again. Whether she secures another world title this season remains to be seen, however, I’ll be carrying her on my surf dogs team all season. I’m also picking up Aimee Donahoe. She and Steph. both have that smooth flowing style that Parko has. I just love it! I’ll also hang on to the spit fire Sam Cornish. She’s a hard charger. I’m not sure about Layne yet. I hope she has a better season and I know she’ll be on one of my teams. She is still one of my favorites. She has done so much for the sport, I can’t help but have a soft spot for her and she is a powerful surfer. I just hope the young up and comers haven’t gotten the best of her. All in all, I think Layne will pull out some wins this season. She is probably sick of not being on the podium so I expect her to come out firing. As for Karina, I am going to wait and see what she does in the first contest before saying too much about her. I’ll miss Bevo and Chelsea and hope they come back for 2009. At least Bevo is the first alternate so we’ll probably see her in an event or two. Oh and Jessi, look for her to do big things this season. She’s another one I’ll probably pick up.
Good luck everyone!

Billabong Pro Maui: 3rd round

Billabong Pro MauiJessi

So there I was, stoked that the Billabong Pro Maui’s third round was finally running. The waves were beautiful and in the 5ft. range, some bigger. It looked so fun and warm! I caught the end of the 3rd heat where Jessi demolished Woodsy, then got to see KK back in action. She got Sofia so rattled that she couldn’t stay on her board despite making it out of some nice barrels. Too bad. Then it’s time for Steph’s heat against the retiring Rochelle Ballard. This is Rochelle’s last contest so I was stoked to get to see her surf in her last contest in her home state of Hawaii. Well the webcast goes down after Steph’s kick ass waves. Rochelle finally gets a nice one and that’s all I get to see. I was looking so forward to seeing Amee and Bevo’s heat too, especially with Bevo’s WCT hopes on the line. That heat would have been something to witness. They have both been surfing so well, it was no telling how that one could have gone.

Regardless, I was stoked to get to see KK surfing again. I miss seeing her on the tour. It would be so cool if she returned in 2008.

I guess I’ll just have to wait and read about the results later.

2007 Hurricane Season Wrap Up

We had an early one and everyone thought that that was a sign of things to come,ie, heavy duty season. However,it was a rather lackluster hurricane season. Funny thing, though, there is a system in the Atlantic right now and Puerto Rico is getting some surf from it. The east coast already had some swell on the way and Invest 94 is going to give it a little nudge so we should start seeing swell by Wednesday. It will be nice to have something to break up this flatness.
I also want to post an article I ran across which will wrap up the season quite nicely:

As 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Season Ends, Questions Remain

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 December, 2007 : - - As the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season officially comes to a close on November 30, NOAA scientists are carefully reviewing a set of dynamic weather patterns that yielded lower-than-expected hurricane activity across the Atlantic Basin. As a result, the United States was largely spared from significant landfalling storms. However several noteworthy events took place, including two back-to-back Category 5 hurricanes hitting Central America and the rapid near-shore intensification of the single U.S. landfalling hurricane.

As a whole, the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season produced a total of 14 named storms, including six hurricanes, two of which became major hurricanes. NOAA’s August update to the seasonal forecast predicted 13 to 16 named storms – of which seven to nine would be hurricanes, including three to five major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher. An average season has 11 named storms, with six becoming hurricanes, including two major hurricanes.
Tracks of all named storms of the 2007 season; Stronger-than-predicted winds over the Caribbean and western tropical Atlantic led to stronger wind shear- limiting storm formation, duration, and intensity.
“The 2007 Atlantic hurricane season produced the predicted number of named storms, but the combined number, duration and intensity of the hurricanes did not meet expectations,â€? said Gerry Bell, Ph.D., lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. “The United States was fortunate this year to have fewer strong hurricanes develop than predicted. Normally, the climate patterns that were in place produce an active, volatile hurricane season.â€?

Women’s Fantasy Surfer Hot Picks

I took this from the Women’s Fantasy Surfer website. I know you all don’t always check the site so here it is:

With two events left on the schedule, there appears to be a growing feeling that Stephanie Gilmore is about to seal up her first world title. Many are already crunching the numbers on exactly what it will take for her to seal the deal ala Mick Fanning and put the points race out of the reach of her opponents.

But with such a stacked field opposing her at Sunset, chances are we’ll have to wait until the final event at Honolua Bay to see any champions crowned.

With the event relocating to Haleiwa for two years, (2004 & 2005), many chalk up Chelsea Hedges victory at the Roxy Pro in 2005 as having been won at Sunset Beach. But make no mistake – there are really only a handful of surfers to watch out for in this event, and none of them call themselves goofyfoots. Layne Beachley has won at Sunset beach 4 times previously and, as always, will be the surfer to watch if the surf gets bigger than 5 to 6 foot.

But who else has the wave knowledge to pull off a victory at the expansive lineup of Sunset Beach?

Here are Fantasy Surfer’s hot picks for Sunset Beach:

Some of the pros and turkey

This came from the ASP World Tour news that I subscribe to. I’m working on 5 other blogs right now and just can’t seem to finish them. I’ll get the Women’s Fantasy Surfer up later today. We’re running out of time to make our picks for Sunset!

Let’s Talk Turkey

Well a “gobble gobble to you too. With Thanksgiving approaching us this Thursday, and our seasoned pros scattered to the four corners of the Earth like dust to the wind, ASP tracked down a few members of the ASP World Tour to find out the who, where, what of their respective holiday plans.

Where will you be come Turkey Day?

Pancho Sullivan (HAW) -
“I am very happy to say that I will be at home with my family here on the North Shore. I’ll be with my wide and my two children, Kirra and Kanekoa, my mom, my mom and dad, Uncle Howard, Hog and my cousin Kevin. We’ll just be hanging out together and being thankful for the man blessings in our lives; sharing a great meal together and watching a bit of football. I am thankful for the love of my family.

Megan Abubo (HAW) -
“Rochelle Ballard and I have a 12 year running Thanksgiving that we host with our friends, family and tour surfers at her house. I’ll be there with my family, Rochelle’s family and mostly Aussies from the ASP Women’s World Tour – haha. I’ll be making a turkey and a side dish. Rochelle makes a turkey too and we get people to do other things. I’m thankful for every blessed small detail in my life that allows me to be free and happy, and I’m thankful for my loved ones and good health.

Fun Session

Thanks to Gabrielle moving north rather quickly, the wind went offshore sooner than expected which was both good and bad. Good was the fact that many of us were pleasantly surprised when we went to WB yesterday morning and the surf was really clean. Bad was the fact that the wind went offshore Saturday night so the swell didn’t last long.

oceanbb.jpgI got up before the sun Sunday morning, pulled up the Crystal Pier cam,and saw what looked like some fun surf so I put on a pot of coffee. I didn’t go out until I saw someone, who turned out to be Tico, paddling out. I raced down to the beach and went up to the pier and saw a bunch of people out with long period groundswell coming in. Devon, a welcome sight, came walking down and asked me if I was going out. I replied,”it’s clean so I might as well.”

I paddled out near the pier and there was Tico. He always brightens my day with his good energy and great hugs! Then there was Steve, our resident “Negative Nancy”. All he does is bitch and complain about everything from what I’m riding to people sitting inside and ruining HIS waves. Luckily none of us got caught up in it. Devon wondered aloud, why he even surfs. I wondered the same thing. Finally he went in. I guess he had had enough of himself.
Then a couple of wanna be pro shortboarders paddled out and infiltrated our line up but still didn’t quite ruin it except maybe for Devon. They didn’t seem to like her longboarding and being able to catch the waves a little farther out. hahahah! I told her we would read about her on the WBLive forum. Regardless, she was dropping into some bombs and making them. The boys were probably just jealous.
It was a great day even though I did have to leave and go to work. The waves were about 3-5ft. with some bigger ones coming through and it was an easy paddle out since it was such a long period swell. The vibe was so good and everyone just kept smiling which made for a perfect day!

(ed note: this pic is of Ocean- but not from Gabrielle- this was taken 8.24.07)

Time for another tropics update

at200799_sat_anim.gif
Click the thumbnail to see the storm come to life.
Well it looks like we may be in for an actual hurricane in the Carolina’s. Disturbance 99L is shaping up quite nicely. The GFDL model shows a little circulation and tropical storm development for tomorrow. Once the high pressure moves off the North Carolina coast, this makes room for the disturbance to develop and become organized and head on a more westerly direction. The high has kept the storm from moving towards the east coast. Some of the models show the storm “fishing” which means turning away from the coast and heading out to sea. This one bears watching because all of the models have it developing at about 96 hours out. The GFDL has it becoming a Cat 2 and nailing the Carolina’s. As usual, we just have to wait and see if we have Gabrielle coming to visit. I may be paddling out to my special place well off the coast sometime this weekend. The seas will be on the rise through the weekend. It’s going to be messy unless you know where to go for cover to avoid the strong NE winds. And there is more than one place in Southern NC. Regardless of the surf, we should keep our eyes on it just in case we have to make any last minute preparations. I’ll update tomorrow after one of the later model runs unless anything significant happens overnight.

There is another system that should be falling off Africa in the next few days and it appears that a tropical depression will form off the Cape Verde Islands. So far the models show this one going along the same path as Dean. It’s way out and the models don’t do so well when systems are this far out. It’s good to watch them though. The African Wave Train is alive and well right now and September could blow up.
