Featuring East Coast Surfer Girl Erin Wall

Homebreak: Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

I met Erin while working at the local paper. She was a new hire in the photography department. She was looking for a room to rent and it happened my friend Katie had a room in Wrightsville Beach. Erin turned out to be a darn good surfer, photographer, and friend.

When did you begin surfing? A year and a half ago my boyfriend broke his foot. I'd take his board out while he was laid up on the couch. I went everyday. I loved it!

So you got a board? Yes, two. I have a nine foot Allison and seven-seven Allison. (Will Allison is a local shaper and surf legend in Wilmington, NC)

Who do you surf with? My boyfriend Woody mostly. I go out a lot by myslef too. And occaisonally we get a girl crew out there.

Been on any surf trips? I went to Costa Rica, the Pacific Coast. The best surf was head high, super clean, long rights and lefts, at this beach break. I had only been surfing 6 months and was stoked. The waves were so much easier to ride, they didn't close out and they went on forever. I learned how to turn and really perform maneuvers.

Where'd you grow up? In western North Carolina, city of Charlotte. Then Chapel Hill for college and now here.
Dream trip? Trip to Central America with no return flight.

How you are you received as a girl int he line up? It's never bothered me. When I was a kid I played baseball and was the only girl. It has never been an issue. I think guys may look at me differently, but sometimes it's like we get more credit just for being out there.

How's the surfer girl population in your town? I'm always excited when I see another girl out. It's either I'm the only girl out or there is a bunch of us. At the East Coast Wahine Championships that is held here, I couldn't believe the amount of girls who surfed. Editor's Note: Erin entered the Novice Longboard Division at the ECWC and won first place.

Does the shortboard crowd give you a hard time for being a longboarder? Usually where I surf is mainly longboarders, but yeah I still get grief. Around here if you have a longboard you end up having more fun anyway. There's more small days than big ones.

What else do you do for fun? Bike riding, hanging out with friends, and photography.

What do you take pictures of? Everything. Everyday people and their lives. I met and photographed Aaron Chang when he came through town. I was nervous since he's such an accomplished photographer. He was super kind, really helpful, and inspiring. I've learned so much, I see things that maybe others wouldn't see, something that would make a good picture. Since it's my job to take pictures, it means a lot when I see something I really want to shoot.

What camera equipment do you want most? I really want an underwater housing. I used to shoot surfing all the time, now I find myself in the water instead.

Thanks For Your Time Erin! Now check out some of her photos
